Outside the villa


With our policy of continuous maintenance, something has always just been painted/altered so the villa always looks pristine. This year, the bedrooms have been painted and the villa has been inspected (successfully) for its Alojamento Local certificate.
The front terrace has been extended with hardwood decking to give a large area for relaxing or entertaining. This area is sunny in the morning making it an ideal spot for an al fresco breakfast.
The rear of the villa is almost completely tiled and includes a barbecue area with food preparation space and a dining area with seating for six. The oleander hedge provides privacy whilst still allowing views to the far hills. This area is sunny in the afternoon/evening.
A store room in the carport contains a washer/dryer and a second shower.

Inside


Inside the villa, doors from the hall lead into two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and lounge.
The double bedroom at the rear overlooks the patio and flower border while the front twin bedroom overlooks the pebble garden with a small but productive lemon tree (try a fresh lemon with your gin & tonic!)
The bathroom is tiled in marble and includes a bidet and a shower over the bath.
The kitchen includes a cooker with ceramic top and fan oven, fridge/freezer, microwave etc. and sufficient cooking utensils to satisfy most cooks.
The dining room has an elegant serving hatch from the kitchen, dining table seating six and comfortable seating for relaxing or watching the television which receives most UK programmes and will also play CDs/DVDs (a small selection is provided).
For winter guests, the log burning stove makes the room very cosy.
A telephone is provided free of charge for calls within Portugal (taxis, restaurants etc.) and this will also receive incoming international calls.

Praia da Luz


The delightful beach at Praia da Luz is about 20 minutes walk along the main road However, there are no footpaths and the road is very busy in the main tourist season. There are bus stops outside the main gate with regular services to Praia da Luz or Lagos.
Praia da Luz (or ‘Praia de Igregia de nossa senhora da Luz’ if you wish!) dates back to Roman times and the remains of a bath complex and fish salting tanks can still be seen near the sea front.
For hundreds of years, tuna fishing was the main industry with nets stretched across the bay from the Forteleza. For no apparent reason, the tuna went out to sea and are now only caught by fishing vessels from Lagos leaving Luz to become a quiet holiday resort with one of the best beaches on the Algarve.
To the east of the beach is Rocha Negra, a prominent black rock, formed from lava produced from the volcanoes of Monchique about 160 million years ago.
There are sufficient bars and restaurants to cater for all tastes, an excellent supermarket and a selection of shops covering most requirements.

Lagos


Lagos, about 5 km away on the N125, is a charming historic little town of Moorish ancestry. It was once a fishing village but grew in importance under the Arabs who built several fortifications. It became an important naval centre in the age of the Discoveries and, in the 15th century, became the capital of the Algarve from 1576 to 1756.
The town was extensively damaged by the earthquake of 1755 so the beautiful buildings which can now be seen date mainly from the 18th and 19th century. There is a cosmopolitan feel to Lagos with a fine new marina to welcome boats sailing in from the Atlantic.
The beaches around Lagos are some of the most beautiful of the Algarve, like Praia de Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and Meia Praia, where the sands stretch for 4 km (2.5 miles) east of Lagos.
The cobbled streets are home to several al fresco restaurants and interesting shops. The square is frequently host to entertaining street theatre but most of all its character is one of peaceful charm.

Golf


The nearest golf course is 'Boa Vista' - about five minutes drive in the direction of Lagos with further nearby options at Palmeras (with spectacular views of the coastline), Parque da Floresta and Morgado do Reguengo [2 courses]. All are, apparently, a real joy to play and if you are prepared to travel a little further there are many more available.

Getting about


A car is recommended for at least a part of your stay and the owners normally use 'Marina Rentacar' in Lagos. tel 00351282764789.
Alternatively, local buses are cheap and regular. They will take you along routes which you probably wouldn't use by car so you will see more of the area. You can travel by bus to Burgau, Salema etc. But you will not be able to get to some of the more remote beaches.

Beaches


The delightful beach at Praia da Luz is only about 20 minutes walk along the main road However, there are no footpaths and the road is very busy in the main tourist season. There are bus stops outside the main gate with regular services to Praia da Luz or Lagos.
There are several beaches in Lagos, the longest being Mia Praia. Also, go along the Piedade to the lighthouse where you can walk around the cliff top and down to the fantastic caves.
En route, call at Praia de Camillo where you can go down to the beach or eat fresh fish at Restaurante de Camillo on the cliff top.
Drive along the N125 in the direction of Sagres and you can explore many beaches along the way, each one different in character.

“This was not our first visit and we found that the bus service had improved since last time. We visited many small secluded beaches along the coast towards Sagres. All were very nice but Anna (9yrs) still prefers the beach at Praia da Luz. October is still very warm so we enjoyed several barbecues.”
