About Kadaltheeram Beach Resort

Kadaltheeram Beach Resort is a small family run Hotel set in amongst the coconut trees right by the beach in a Hindu village 7km South of Kovalam. Staying here gives you the experience of living in an Indian Village and is more like a home than the usual Hotel Complex. There are no high walls separating you from the outside world so you can watch everyday life going on as the children leave for school and the local people go about their daily chores. Your rooms are cleaned daily and we are there to help organise any trips you may want to go on, answer any questions and generally make sure that you have everything while you are staying with us. We have our own taxi so can arrange a pick up or drop off at the airport if you want us to.

Apartments for rental at Kadaltheeram

There are 6 apartments for rental at Kadaltheeram, all have sea views, ensuite wetroom and private balcony or veranda. There is one room with A/c but all rooms have natural ventalation and ceiling fans.
Towells, bedding, soap, mosquito mats & plug ins are provided along with universal plug adapters. All rooms have a mini fridge, kettle with tea, sugar and powdered milk and also cutlery and crockery so you can bring back a snack to your room and eat it on the balcony if you want to.

Main Hotel
The Ground Floor House Accommodation has a twin bedroom with en-suite wet room, a sitting room with settee, chairs & coffee table and a kitchen / dining room with large fridge, twin gas hob, microwave and all Indian & European cooking utensils. From the dining table you look out onto the garden and the Arabian Sea.

The Apartments in Main Hotel.
There are three separate apartments upstairs all with en-suite wet rooms and private balconies. All the separate apartments have a mini fridge, kettle with tea, sugar & powdered milk plus crockery & cutlery so that you can bring back a meal or snack and eat on your balcony. The upstairs rooms are accessed from an outside staircase.

The Kerala House
Situated in the garden in front of the Main Hotel the Kerala House has two separate apartments with en-suite wet rooms and private veranda. Both apartments have the same facilities as the upstairs apartments in the main hotel. The pathway leads down to the beach sit-out area and restaurant.

Beach sit-out area & our Restaurant

Down the steps at the bottom of the Garden by the Kerala House leads you to our Beachside Restaurant and Beach sit-out area with sun beds, deckchairs and hammocks. There is access through the small door on to the beach for a warm swim in the Arabian Sea….temp 25 degrees.
Sit outside our Restaurant, enjoy the fantastic views during breakfast, lunch and dinner orhave some snacks and drinks and then relax in the hammocks and loungers.
Raj, our Chef can cook you traditional Kerala meals or European food for those that don’t like spicy cuisine. A varied Menu awaits you and if you would like something special then you only have to ask in advance and we will get it in for you.

History Of Kadaltheeram

I started coming here 9 years ago and stayed in a large hotel next door to where I have built mine. I fell in love with the area and its people immediately but felt trapped in the Hotel complex. I wanted to be part of India and not behind closed doors and high walls. I stayed in other hotels in the village during the next few years until in 2004 when I bought some land off Ambi, my friend and now co-director.
Originally it was just going to be a family retreat but soon after I had built the main house the land in front came up for sale. I realised I would loose the wonderful view of the sea and so I decided to buy the land in front right down to the beach and set about building my ideal hotel with comfortable rooms but without the restrictions of a normal hotel so that guests could feel part of the village and really experience India. It is very much a family run Hotel and I help out serving in our restaurant and cleaning the rooms when we are busy. I have used all local village craftsmen for the building work and bought all the trees and had the carpenters make the doors, windows, beds and furniture so that I could have exactly what I wanted as well as helping out the local economy. Location

We are situated about half an hour drive away from Trivandrum Airport and 15 minutes from Kovalam and Lighthouse Beach. The Village, Nellikunnu, is Hindu and it is very peaceful and quiet here when compared to Kovalam. There are several larger Hotel complexes, which specialise in Auyervedic Treatment and shops selling gifts and jewellery etc. There are several temples in the village and a coconut oil factory which you are welcome to pop in and look at. We have our own taxi and a tariff is in the rooms to give you a guide on the current price of taxi fares which is there for you to take out with you so that you know what you should be paying if you have to get a taxi outside the Hotel. We can arrange any trips for you when you are here and Ambi knows where the best places are should want to stay overnight if it is a longer journey. Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala, is about 30 mins drive away and has museums, temples, parks etc as well as lots of shops for clothes and souvenirs, spices and jewellery. There is immediate access onto the beach at the bottom of the garden. If you are feeling energetic you can have a game of football or cricket with the local children on the beach after school or just go for a walk through the coconut groves and see the fishermen hauling in their nets or just sit and take in the beautiful scenery and secluded bays. Day trips can be taken on the Local Backwaters, Cape Comorin, Varkala, Elephant orphanage, Golden Hill and the views of the Western Ghats. Longer trips with overnight stays can be taken to Madurai, Cochin, Munnar, Thekaddy or Alleppey

Services at Kadaltheeram

The rooms are cleaned daily and all bedding / towels are changed every two or three days. Ambi, my co-director and his wife run it during the off season and I come and help run it, along with my Mother, between Nov – May and normally Aug / Sept. Manju, Ambis wife and Anitha do any washing and ironing for you for a small charge. If you need dry cleaning we can arrange that for you. One of us is around for several hours in the morning and evening to answer questions and check everything is OK. There is a list of emergency numbers in your room in case we are not there. This consists of doctors / hospital / police / airport / our mobile numbers and Ambis home number. Their home is only a minute walk away from the Hotel. If there is anything you need, bread, water, fruit etc then let us know and we will pop out on the scooter and get it for you.

Sports, entertainment etc.

There is not a pool at Kadaltheeram, the sea is suitable for swimming between Nov- April depending on the conditions. You have to be a fairly competent swimmer as the Arabian Sea has got a bit of a rip and goes deep quite quickly. If you are at all worried then you can go to a more sheltered beach at coconut bay (the next bay to us – 2 min walk) the large hotel there has security staff and lifeguards on the beach. It is also more sheltered so tends to be calmer for swimming and very good for snorkelling.
It is possible to arrange for a game of Golf at Trivandrum Golf Club. Clubs can be hired but appropriate clothes and shoes must be worn. There is also a Tennis Club in Trivandrum.
Cultural evenings are run by the Keralan Tourist Board and several of the large Hotels. The Hotel next door to us have a cultural evening once every couple of weeks and let me know whenever this is happening so our guests can go if they want to. It includes food which is normally a buffet and is around R 400 / 500 for the evening, drinks are extra.
During Feb & March there are lots of local Temple Festivals and Malayalam Plays / Musical Dance evenings going on at the temples. Everyone is welcome to go along and watch and there is a big feast for the whole village with traditional Festival food served on the Banana Leaf, the local people will invite you to go along and eat at the Festival and it is an experience not to be missed. The Keralan people are so generous and kind and it is perfectly safe to go out walking on your own here.
