“We stayed at Shades for 2 weeks in July 07. As it was the first time in the Carribean we were a little worried about what to expect, however these concerns were completely unfounded from the moment we met Jacqui at the airport. We were taken to Shades in our brand new hire car, driven by Jacqui. On route she pointed out places of interest. On arriving in St James and up a small side road we were again a little concerned as the road was a little uneven, however once again we were proved wrong. All I can say is Shades is a little gem hidden away. The appartment, the grounds and the pool were beautiful. My daughter was in the pool within 20mins of arriving. Shades have maids who come every day except Sundays, to change the towels, make the beds, generally clean the appartment - they were fab. Nothing was too much trouble for Jacqui or Mr McCollin. Jacqui organised a catamaran trip (Cool Runnings - also definitely recommended) for us and would have organised pretty much anything we wanted. We even had access to a mobile phone where we just needed to buy a top up voucher - much cheaper using this to phone home than to use our own mobiles. The location of Shades is great - it takes about 5 mins to walk down to the beach which is heaven - white sands and clear blue sea. The catamarans stop at Paynes Bay to snorkel with the turtles. If you get there the right time of day you can also swim with them (and not pay anything). You can tell Shades is a family run business as you almost become part of the family. If you want they'll also organise breakfast for you and deliver it in the morning. I would definitely recommend hiring a car (which Shades also organised) and visiting the other parts of the island - it's so different on the other side of the island. The roads in certain places are interesting to say the least so take care but well worth the bumps to get to places like Crane Beach and Bathsheba. Earthworks Pottery is definitely worth a visit as is Kendall Shooting Ground. Calabazza, Il Tempio are great restaurants as are Mangos by the Sea, Olives and The Coach House - pub quiz on a Wed night. All in all the holiday was fab and I'd definitely not go through a travel agent again when you find places like Shades. Definitely a thumbs up from my 12 year old daughter, husband and myself. You won't be disappointed.”
